Seeds instead of Mines

Whether „Danger! Mines!“ oder „Peligro! Minas!“ – the skull on the sign and the ominous message stands worldwide for a past which was characterize by violence, death and war. Although it seems that countries such as Kambodscha and Nicaragua have found peace, a deadly danger remains lingering: minefields deny the population to lead a free and untroubled life according to their circumstances and at the same time potential resources remain unexploited. For such countries, whose economy is mainly based upon agriculture the presence of mines has a drastic impact, and not to forget the population’s quality of life which is dominated by fear and horror.   Thoughts like these must have resulted in Mr. Amamiya to found a company intern project in cooperation with Hitachi in 1995, which was dedicated to the development of demining machines. The piece of equipment created with his coordination and leadership incorporates two groundbreaking abilities: the safe disposal of mines and the simultaneous cultivation of the ground.  Subsequently, the highly dangerous and ineffective manual mine searching has come to an end. The manual removal of all mines worldwide would take over 1000 years and an even greater number of lives. The device works so efficient and successful that in crisis zones all over the world more than 50 of it are in use already. Due to its 50th anniversary Kiesel made use of the occasion and contributed its personal donation to the project. Instead of gifts Kiesel generated a substantial amount as donation to the project “Seeds instead of Mines”. With the generous support of its clients and suppliers Kiesel was able to collect the proud sum of 70.000 €. The donation is dedicated to the school project in Rosei Ro: Since 2001, the village Slab Pang and its 492 inhabitants are recognized by their government which lies in the North-West of Kambodscha in the province of Batambang. The area of Ou Slab Pang is approximately 1.007 and subdivides into settlement areas (240ha), rice fields (452ha), orchards (10 ha) and 300 ha of mine fields. Especially, Rosei Ro und Prey Preal are still strongly mined. Close to Ou Slab Pang are the informal settlements of Prey Preal (appr. 3,5 km from Ou Slab Pang) and Rosey Ro (appr. 3 km from Pres Preal) located. Despite the communities being located closely to each other their connections are bad – only a single path connects the villages which during the rain season is barely passable. In the year of 2009 GEJ’s activities will concentrate on the construction of a school in Rosei Ro. At the moment three self build wooden barracks – partly without walls – accommodate 144 school children in Rosei Ro. As the school is not recognized by the government the children only receive few lessons and no official school records. With the help of our „Seeds instead of mines“ donation the construction of a new school building with fixed walls and waterproof roof has already begun in December 2008, which will offer good conditions even during the rain season.    The building will be divided into three class rooms with 20 tables each and a black board as well as a separate teacher’s room. In order to guarantee an independent supply the school will have its own toilettes, combustion oven for litter, two water tanks as well as a hand well. Four teachers will teach the children two hours a day and receive a monthly pay of 15US$. It was already confirmed that with the school’s move to the new building the school will be recognized by the government, in order for the children to receive their official diploma from the “Kiesel School Rosei Ro”.
